Concrete Driveways, Patios and Slabs in Augusta and the CSRA
Augusta sits on the fall line: red Piedmont clay to the north and west, sand to the south and east, and both move with water. A driveway or patio that lasts here is about what is under the concrete as much as the concrete itself. Post your job free and local concrete Pros bid.

Under the slab
Why CSRA driveways crack, and what a good pour does about it.
Concrete rarely fails on its own here. It fails because the ground under it moved: clay that swells in a wet winter and shrinks in a dry August, sand that washes out where a downspout dumps, a tree root lifting one corner. The fix is in the preparation.
- Base and compaction. On red clay, the top soil comes off, the subgrade is compacted, and a crushed stone base goes down and is compacted again. On sandy ground the stone base matters less but drainage matters more. Ask what base thickness is in the quote.
- Thickness and strength. Four inches is the common residential driveway thickness, five or six where trucks or an RV will park. Ask for the mix strength in psi (3,000 to 4,000 is the usual range for driveways) and whether fiber or wire mesh or rebar is included.
- Control joints. Concrete will crack; joints decide where. Cut or tooled joints at roughly the slab thickness in feet times 2 to 3 (8 to 12 feet apart on a 4-inch slab) keep cracks straight and hidden.
- Water away from it. A driveway pitched toward the garage, or a patio that holds a puddle at the house, is a problem on day one. Slope, a drain at the garage door, and downspouts routed off the slab are part of the design, not extras.
- Heat and curing. CSRA summer pours set fast. A crew that pours early, keeps the surface damp or uses a curing compound, and does not finish a hot slab too early avoids the surface scaling and crazing that show up the first winter.
The job
What a driveway, patio or slab quote should include.
- Demolition and haul-off of the old driveway, if there is one, as its own line
- Grading, the base material and its thickness, and compaction
- Slab thickness, mix strength, reinforcement, and the joint plan
- The finish: broom, smooth trowel, exposed aggregate, stamped or colored, and sealing
- How water will leave the slab: slope, drains, and where the downspouts go
- Who calls for utility locates before digging, and who handles the permit if one is needed
- When you can walk on it and when you can drive on it (usually a week before cars, longer for heavy vehicles)
Concrete is priced by the square foot, with demolition, thickness, reinforcement, decorative finishes and access for the truck all moving the number. A photo of the site and a rough length and width get you comparable quotes without a sales visit.
Permits and rules
Do you need a permit for a driveway or patio in the CSRA?
It depends on where the slab is, not just what it is, and the answer changes at every city line. Augusta's own list puts sidewalks and driveways among the jobs that need no permit; so does Grovetown's ("Sidewalks and driveways do not require a permit"); Harlem exempts driveways and sidewalks but asks for a Driveway Permit before a second driveway is cut; the City of Aiken says a driveway or parking pad needs no permit. Go the other way and it flips: in McDuffie County and Thomson a patio is an accessory structure that needs a permit and a new driveway starts with a pipe permit from the County Road Department; Jefferson County's permit scope names driveways, patios and slabs; inside Sandersville, slabs, driveways, patios and walkways are all permitted work. Columbia County's permit pages do not mention flatwork, and a driveway apron that touches a public road can need a separate right-of-way permit anywhere. Before the pour, your Pro should confirm with the building office for your address, and many Columbia County subdivisions also need homeowners association approval for a visible slab or a widened driveway.
Georgia requires a state license for remodeling work over $2,500. Concrete flatwork on its own can fall under different rules, so ask how the Pro is licensed and insured, and look up any license number on the Georgia Secretary of State's verification site before you sign. In South Carolina, residential work above the state threshold needs a licensed residential builder or specialty contractor.
By area
Concrete work around Augusta, county by county.
Augusta and Richmond County. Older driveways cracked and heaved by oak roots, carports being enclosed, and the sandier soils of south Augusta where washout at the edges is the usual failure. Concrete Pros in Augusta, Hephzibah, Blythe.
Columbia County: Evans, Martinez, Grovetown, Harlem. Red clay subdivisions where the builder's driveway was poured thin on an uncompacted lot and has been settling since. Widening, replacement and new patios are the common calls. Evans, Martinez, Grovetown, Harlem.
North Augusta and Aiken, SC. Sandy soils that drain well but wash out; the base and the edges are where the money should go. North Augusta, Aiken.
Thomson, Waynesboro and Louisville. Fewer crews and longer drives for the ready-mix truck, which makes posting the job and letting Pros come to you the practical way to get three real quotes. Thomson, Waynesboro, Louisville.

FAQ
Concrete driveways and patios: common questions.
How much does a concrete driveway cost in Augusta?
It is priced by the square foot and depends on demolition, thickness, base work, reinforcement and the finish. Post the size and a photo on HammerDuck and compare several quotes side by side.
How thick should a residential driveway be?
Four inches is standard for cars, five to six where a truck, boat or RV will park. Thickness without a compacted base is wasted, so ask about both.
Why did my driveway crack in the first year?
Usually the ground under it: uncompacted fill, clay that swelled and shrank, or water running under an edge. Sometimes joints were cut too late or too far apart, so the crack chose its own line.
Can concrete be poured in a CSRA summer?
Yes, and most of it is. Crews pour early in the morning and manage the cure. A pour at 2 p.m. in July with no curing is where surface problems come from.
Do I need a permit for a concrete patio or driveway?
A driveway that meets a public street usually needs a driveway or encroachment permit from the road office; a back yard patio depends on the jurisdiction. Your Pro should confirm with the building office for your address before the pour, and many Columbia County subdivisions also need HOA approval.
