Epoxy Floor Pros Who Know What Damp Concrete Does to a Coating

Most garage and basement slabs in the CSRA were poured over red clay with little or no vapor barrier under them, and the moisture that works up through that concrete all summer is the reason so many coatings peel in their first year. HammerDuck will connect you with local epoxy flooring pros who test and prepare the slab before a drop of coating goes down, whether it is a garage, a basement, a patio or pool deck, or a shop floor.

A contractor screeding a freshly poured concrete slab, the bare concrete an epoxy coating is applied over.

Why This Matters in the South

Built for CSRA conditions, not a national template.

  • Garage floor coating: Georgia humidity and hot tires are the two things that lift a garage coating, and a slab that was never moisture-tested will push a coating off from underneath no matter how good the product is
  • Basement and interior floor coating: below-grade and slab-on-grade floors here stay damp most of the year, so a moisture test and the right primer matter more than the color you pick
  • Patio, porch and pool deck coating: full August sun will yellow and chalk a plain epoxy outdoors, so exterior work needs a UV-stable topcoat, and a slip-resistant texture anywhere water collects
  • Commercial and shop floors: forklifts, dropped tools and hot engine parts call for a thicker build and a harder topcoat than a residential garage, and the quote should reflect how the space is actually used

Pro Tips

A few things worth knowing before you hire.

1

Ask how the concrete will be prepared. Diamond grinding or shot blasting opens the surface so the coating can bond; acid etching alone is a shortcut that fails early on our damp slabs

2

Ask for a moisture test before you sign. It tells you whether the slab needs a moisture-tolerant primer, and it is far cheaper than redoing the floor next summer

3

Hot-tire pickup is the most common garage floor complaint in a Georgia summer. Ask what topcoat the pro uses, how many coats, and how long before you can park on it

4

Recoating an old floor? A peeling coating has to come all the way off, and cracks and spalls have to be patched, before anything new goes down. Get that prep and repair step in writing
